Ann Evankovich’s first hired writing came in
college when she bartered a term paper for a computer program with a
classmate. It wasn’t a big payoff, but she did get a “B” in her Intro to
Computer class. Term papers and literary essays always came easily.
Since that time, Ann earned her Bachelor’s Degree in English Education at
the University of Maryland in 1988. For ten years, Ann taught high school
English in Prince George’s County Schools, the county in Maryland where
she grew up. Not only did she teach English subjects ranging from
yearbook to 9th grade composition to Advanced Placement Literature, she
also taught math and science classes to learning disabled students.
Ann began working as a freelance writer in her spare time in the latter
years of her teaching career. She had several articles published for
religious print magazines and on-line journals. Ann also wrote a great
deal of educational materials used by her local congregation.
After some time off to raise babies and get a divorce, Ann returned to the
workforce as a technical writer. Working with a local general contractor,
Ann collected and organized copious house maintenance information for a
website currently in development. In an effort to be thorough, Ann had
the delightful opportunity to go out with the contracting crews and
participate in some of the repairs and projects about which she had been
writing.
Inspired by the fun on the contracting job sites, Ann began recording her
experiences on a web log (see links.) Although the job site work
has concluded, Ann has continued the recreational blog as a fun writing
exercise.
Moving on from technical writing, Ann has branched into other writing
experiences. Press releases and webcopy for a local restaurant have been
fun assignments. Restaurant critic has proved to be a delicious
assignment. The years as an English teacher are paying off in several
proofreading and manuscript critique projects. As a personal essayist, Ann
has combined two of her pleasures: listening to stories and writing them.
In January of 2007, Ann began working as
the school's columnist for the Crofton News-Crier, a subsidiary of the
Capital-Gazette Communications newspaper. This wonderful writing
assignment combined Ann's experience as a teacher with her writing
skills. She has found interviewing children and teenagers to be a
delightful challenge. Some of her articles run in the Annapolis Capital
and other of the Capital-Gazette family of papers.
Most recently, Ann has begun freelance
writing for Suburban Scene Magazine. Along with advertorials and
assignment pieces, Ann will be maintaining a blog for the magazine's
website discussing the Suburban Singles Scene. She will then write a
column for the monthly print magazine based on the blog conversations. Ann
invites you to join in this conversation at
